MERLION PARK, SINGAPORE
The Merlion is the mythical symbol and the most popular attraction in Singapore. Merlion is a half-fish and half-lion. It is located at One Fullerton near the Waterfront at Marina Bay. The statue stands 8.7 metres tall and weighs as heavy as 70 tonnes. It has a fountain of water sprurting out into the Picturesque Marina Bay. This attraction is completely free to visit. The place also includes cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops and on-site toilets. You can also see the view of Marina Bay and the Marina Bay Sands Hotel.
Based on the history of Merlion, Singapore was known as Temasek when a Japanese prince discovered a mystical beast which he later learnt was a lion. Then he named the island "Singapura" in Sanskrit which means "Lion City". The fish tail of the Merlion represents Singapore's earliest beginnings as a small fishing village.
The statue remains an iconic symbol of the country and a must-see Singapore attraction. The best time to visit the Merlion Park is early in the morning or late at night to avoid the crowd, so that you can take a picture using the most used position that looks like the fountain of water from the Merlion is falling into your own mouth and to have a better picture of the Merlion and the view, and to enjoy the pleasant view across the Marina Bay.
